Inspiration and Creation

Dexter Vespa began as a simple side boss in Star Guardians: The Seven Sources as a fighter in Blitz Arena. When Adam DeVoix began his YouTube channel in 2014, he had the idea of the channel name "VulpesVespa," the Latin names of two of his favorite animals, wasps and foxes. As he made more with the channel, he decided to give it mascots too, representing each of the two animals. He already had Dex as a character in his repertoire, so he decided to make him his wasp mascot, and later invented Cam as his fox mascot. The mascots idea didn't go too far, as they only appeared as characters in one or two videos and made a few appearances on some thumbnails (they also had their own respective Halloween and Christmas specials: Foxtober and Dexember). As this was going on, Adam added Dex and Cam as official characters in his Star Guardians universe. To reference their connection as mascots for Adam's creations, Dex and Cam were included as side characters who canonically were the ones responsible for designing the dialogue boxes and UIs that you would see in the hypothetical game. In Damsel in Distress, they had their own subplot in that installments Chapter S (extra post game chapter), where there were some glitches going on in their studio that had to be managed.

Dex and Cam fell into obscurity since then, Adam not using them for any of his projects until bringing them to Primitive Kingdom around 2023, where the would be greater support characters. They were brought back to life in the published world thanks to Welcome to the Voixiverse in late August 2026, where the two of them created a window into various series Adam made and acting as ambassadors for them. Adam wanted to bring his universes to life by making immersive newsletter-type posts showcasing them, inspired by the NowTime Newsletter from Flipline Studios, and needed a character to host the whole thing. At first, he chose Bippins and Pumpkins from the Doopie and Wells universe, as they would know the most about traveling through different dimensions, but he went even deeper and reminded himself that the purpose of this website and this Voixiverse project was to keep his creations from being completely forgotten. And what better characters to include as a host for showcasing his creations than his original mascots?

Design

Etymology

Dex and Dexter were given as stereotypically nerdy names, to work with Dex's scientific and nerdy personality. Vespa literally translates from Latin to wasp.
